How Long Is a Learner's Licence Valid in South Africa?

A South African learner's licence is valid for 24 months. The period runs from the date of your examination and test, not from the date the licence was printed or collected. When it expires there is no renewal and no extension: you write the learner's test again from the start.

Where the 24 months comes from

Regulation 101(1) of the National Road Traffic Regulations originally set the period at 18 months. In February 2010 the Minister of Transport extended it to 24 months by notice in the Government Gazette, and that is the figure in force today.

The extension changed the length of the period. It did not change where the period starts, and that is the detail worth having.

The date it runs from is not the date on the card

Regulation 101(1) ties the period to "the date of examination and test". Your licence is issued within two working days of the examiner telling you that you passed, and you may collect it later still.

So the clock starts on the day you sat in the test room, not the day you walked out with the document. If you wrote on the 3rd and collected on the 20th, you have lost those seventeen days. It is a small thing until you are booking a driving test in the last fortnight of the second year.

Work from your test date. If you are not sure of it, it is the date of examination recorded against your application at the testing centre.

What happens when it expires

Nothing gradual. There is no renewal process for a learner's licence and no grace period: on the day it expires you stop being allowed to drive on it, and if you still want a driving licence you start again with the learner's test.

That is the practical reason to book the driving test early rather than at the end. Waiting lists at testing centres are measured in months in most provinces, so a booking made with three months left on the learner's is not necessarily a booking that happens while the learner's is still valid.

The mistake that costs people a rewrite

Counting 24 months from the date printed as the issue date, and booking the driving test against that.

The two dates are usually days apart and occasionally weeks. People who plan against the wrong one find out at the counter, and by then the only option is to write the learner's test again.

Common questions

Can I renew my learner's licence?

No. There is no renewal for a learner's licence. Once the 24 months are up you apply again and write the test again.

Can I get an extension if my driving test is booked after it expires?

No. The regulation sets a fixed period with no extension mechanism, which is why the booking date matters more than most learners expect.

Does the 24 months start when I pass or when I collect the licence?

When you pass. Regulation 101(1) runs the period from the date of the examination and test, and your licence is issued within two working days of that.

How long was it before?

18 months. The Minister of Transport extended it to 24 months by notice in the Government Gazette in February 2010.

Can I drive alone on a learner's licence?

Not in a car. Regulation 99(2)(a) requires you to be under the direct personal supervision of someone holding a licence other than a learner's for that class, seated next to you or immediately behind you. Motorcycles are expressly excepted, so a motorcycle learner rides alone — but may not carry a passenger.
